Based on the work of Georg Büchner, who, for the first time in the history of opera, turns a proletarian into a hero, Alban Berg immortalizes this antihero, following in the wake of Verdi, who also made stars out of several marginal characters, such as Rigoletto, Violetta or Othello, and makes him into a symbol of the oppression of men by their fellow men. All this in the decline of a world, such as ours, that is entering in fits and starts into a new era. This production represents the debut in the Teatro Real of the innovative stage director Christoph Marthaler, accompanied by the conductor Sylvain Cambreling.
